When to go

Downhill skiing experiences are available throughout the winter season, when the slopes are open and snow conditions are suitable. The season in Lapland usually runs from late November to early May, while some larger resorts may open selected slopes already in October. December offers a magical Arctic atmosphere with snowy landscapes and festive surroundings, while January and February bring colder temperatures and a true winter feeling. March and April are often the most comfortable months for skiing, with longer daylight hours, milder weather, and excellent spring snow conditions.

For families

Downhill skiing is a great winter activity for families, with many Lapland resorts offering beginner slopes, children’s areas, easy lifts, and ski schools for young skiers. Families can start slowly on gentle slopes and build confidence step by step, while nearby rental shops, cafés, and restaurants make the day easier to manage. Skiing is usually the easiest choice for younger children and first-timers, while snowboarding can be a fun option for older children and teenagers.

Requirements

Downhill skiing does not require previous experience, as beginners can start on easy slopes. You will need skis or a snowboard, boots, poles for skiing, a helmet, warm winter clothing, gloves, and a lift ticket. Most equipment can be rented directly at the resort, where staff help choose the right size and setup for your level. The activity can be relaxed or more physically demanding depending on the slope, weather, snow conditions, and your pace.

Ski Lessons and Ski Schools

Downhill skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed independently, but lessons are strongly recommended for beginners and anyone wanting to improve their technique. Ski schools are widely available at Lapland’s resorts, offering private lessons, group lessons, children’s lessons, and snowboarding instruction. Private lessons are flexible and can be adapted to your level, while group lessons are a social and often more affordable way to learn. Instructors help you practise turning, stopping, using lifts, controlling speed, and moving safely on the slopes.
